About Us

Riverside Market, Inc. was founded in 1948 by Alfred Thorsby, Sr. The original store was located at the corners of Vienna Rd. (M-57) and Seymour Rd. in Montrose, Michigan. Being only a few hundred feet from the Flint River, hence Riverside Market.

The original building is nowhome to the
Montrose Pub. The second generation of
the family, Alfred Thorsby Jr., took over the business and moved it to its current Montrose location on Vienna Rd. in the Montrose Township
in the late 1950’s. Alfred Thorsby, Jr. played baseball for the Philadelphia Athletics, and then joined the U.S. Navy during the Korean War before returning to Montrose to take over the business from his ailing father.

Between 1959 and 1991 the Montrose store underwent 4 major expansions; increasing the store’s size, from its original 8000 sq. ft. to today’s 45,000 sq. ft. Through the 1980’s Alfred’s three sons, Brad, Barry and Pat, all joined the business. Riverside Market was supplied by IGA up until 1981. At that time the move was made to Grand Rapids based Spartan Stores, Inc.

In 1997 Riverside Market purchased Bill’s Food Center in Durand, from the Jones family. During the last several years the business has seen continued growth, and today employs 160 people. In 2008 we celebrated our 60th year in business.
